| 1 - Start a new document, (size is irrelevant, but i did with 500x150).
- press D to go to default settings on the swatches.
- fill background layer with black by either using the paint bucket (side-note: keyboard shortcut G) or pressing alt+backspace.
- choose the type tool and choose a font that has letters of the same size (Arial Black, Impact, etc), type what you want and with whatever color you want.
- (optional) you can add any layer style you want it really doesn't matter, but just for the sake of argument and to make the final result all that more visible i added a few things. (to add layer styles either double-click on the layer you want or with the layer you want selected look to the bottom of the layer palette and use the button with a black circle with a white F in it, then just fiddle around with the settings in the menu that pops up).
- create a new layer (ctrl+shift+n) and set it above the text layer.
- Choose the Gradient Tool by going to the paint bucket tool on the tool pallete and click on it for a second untill a sub-menu appears with the option to select the gradient tool.
- with the gradient tool selected look to the top left of photoshop you should see an example of the gradient it's going to do, click on it once to open a gradient editing menu and use roughly these settings:
Quick Read out of how to edit in this menu included in following image.9 - use your gradient by clicking and holding then draging the cursor horizontaly from one side of the canvas to the other and release.
- now time to add a layer mask (look to the bottow of the layer palette and use the button that is a grey square with a white circle in it. (right next to the layer style button).
- select the mask by clicking on it's window inside the layer you put it in (it's a rectangle that's all white with a chain to the left of it) then move your cursor over the text layer (more specifically over the T symbol)and press ctrl+click on it, a selection of the text should appear.
- look to the top of photoshop and look for a menu that says "Select", click on it and choose modify > Expand, choose 1 pixel and press ok.
- press ctrl+shift+I to invert the selection (make sure your default colors are still black and white) and press alt+backspace, the layer mask rectangle should have just turned itself almost completely black:
- repeat step 11 and click alt+backspace, some more of the mask should've turned black.
- now let's go to ImageReady either click ctrl+shift+m (not n that'll make a new layer) or go to File > Edit in ImagReady.
- We're almost there hang on, lock both the text layer and the background layer and click on the chain on the layer with the mask, now you can move the gradient freely without moving the mask.
- the stage should look something like this: 18 - click on the new frame button you just saw on the image and select the first frame again.
- choose rectangle that doesn't have the mask (the left rectangle) in the only unlocked layer, a blue lined selection box should have appeared around the gradient, click on the blue line and move the cursor to the left taking caution not to go over the slightly lighter blue line that imageready shows you, drag the cursor untill none of the gradient is visible on the the letters.
Edit: reffer to images incase of doubt.
- choose the second frame and if your blue lined selection is still inside the canvas just click the blue line and drag it all the way to the right untill none of the gradient is visible on the letters, if the selection is not inside the canvas just click and hold the right arrow in your keyboard untill it appears and then drag it.
Edit: reffer to step 19's new images in case of doubt.
- your canvas should now look something like this:22 - click the tween button you just saw on the image and use these settings: 23 - click play if the in the motion the gradient is going up to down or down to up as it goes along the letters then you went above the lighter blue lines when moving the gradient and need to back up and do it again (press ctrl+z to go back step by step).
- go to the first frame and click under it where it says "0 sec." and choose 1.
- that concludes this tutorial i hope you had no problems following it and your finished result should look something like this | |
